Not so long ago the whole country was in such fury condemning the two Members of the Parliament (MP) for their snippy remarks on menstrual cycle during a parliamentary debate session.
Though this verbal diarrhea was no isolated occasion, but this one managed to stank up the whole Parliament building and beyond. The shit spilled over into the headlines on the papers and prime time news airtime. Some even splashed onto the street resulting in peaceful (read: lame) demonstrations. Everyone was talking about it, on the net, on TV talk shows, radio call-in, corridor talks, water cooler talks, and the Malaysian favorite mamak stall teh tarik sessions.
It was indeed disgraceful and despicable getting such remarks from the MPs, men with honor (supposedly) and respectable stature, during such honorable occasion and in such a prestigious hall. We the people entrusted these men, by electing them to represent us in the highest legislature in the country. How shameful are they? How sad?
Hold on a second!
We the people actually voted for them and put them there!? We the people actually elected them to represent us?!
What does that say about us the people?
Unfortunately, to a great extent, they do represent us the people. Are we not just as ignorant about gender equality issues? Are we not just as unaware of sexism, racism and other discriminations around us? Are we not just as oblivious to human right matters?
Something to think about eh.
